ClimRR (pronounced Cl"eye"mer) gives state, local, tribal and territorial emergency managers and other community leaders access to highly localized, neighborhood level projections from mid- to the end of the century. Produced using a supercomputer to model over 60 variables, ClimRR data provides the most sophisticated, free dynamically downscaled projections for the United States.
ClimRR data is available for 12-kilometer grid cells across the country for extreme temperatures (hot and cold), cooling and heating degree days, heat index, wind, fire weather index, precipitation/no precipitation under two carbon emission scenarios (Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 4.5 and RCP 8.5 and for 2 time horizons (mid to end of the century).
Yes. ClimRR models potential variables under two scenarios: one in which the world proceeds in a "business as usual case" in terms of emitting greenhouse gases (RCP 8.5) and one in which the world takes sufficient action to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement — to limit global temperature rise to 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels (RCP 4.5).
ClimRR includes a few data layers for community infrastructure and population characteristics. Users can click on these data layers to see the combination of current community characteristics with future conditions. This allows you to examine areas in the community that may need planning and investment to improve resilience in the future. You can also combine ClimRR data layers with the Resilience Analysis and Planning Tool (RAPT) and other GIS webmaps.
ClimRR includes a series of sample use cases to illustrate how the data in ClimRR can be used by people in different professions. For example, there is a use case outlining how public health officials and emergency managers can leverage ClimRR data to better prepare for extreme heat events in their communities. ClimRR data can also help jurisdictions update their Hazard Mitigation Plan.
The data in ClimRR is produced by the Center for Resilience and Decision Science at the United States Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory using modeling that is among the most sophisticated methodologies worldwide. ClimRR makes extensive datasets available in a non-technical format. The projections are produced using the dynamical downscaling method, which simulates the many different processes affecting the atmosphere, ocean and land. The data in ClimRR has been made publicly available at no cost by Argonne and AT&T. After commissioning Argonne to produce projections for the company’s own adaptation efforts, AT&T realized the value in making this data available to everyone. AT&T is a committed private-sector collaborator in the effort to build resilient communities across the United States and will continue to share insights and democratize access to these valuable datasets. In addition, Argonne developed other datasets included in this portal that are being made freely available to the public. All data is not intended for commercial use.
ClimRR is designed to be interactive with the Resilience Analysis and Planning Tool (RAPT). Uses can add ClimRR layers to RAPT to combine today's infrastructure, community, and population data with tomorrow's conditions. For example, users can analyze future projections of high temperatures alongside community data on population age, populations with disabilities or those that are particularly medically dependent on electricity.
